 Community Organizing Fellow

The Community Organizing Internship is designed for college students or recent college graduates who have an interest in community organizing, social justice, labor rights, immigration justice, and activism. Fellows will work with the Council Office’s Organizing and Civic Engagement and Community Organizing Team on door-to-door canvassing efforts in order to educate community members on a range of issues as well as identify leaders in the community for recruitment, training, and committee building. They will develop a functional understanding of city politics, key issues in the district, as well as know-your-rights knowledge for tenants, immigrants, and workers. They will work to connect community members with resources and other organizations that are building power in communities made up of working-class renters and immigrants. Fellows will develop a capstone project where they support the development of neighborhood-based committees and leadership academies. The fellows also work collaboratively with other teams in the City Council office, and will get a first-hand understanding of city politics and government work in general.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct direct outreach to community members by going door to door
  • Conduct direct outreach to tenants who have received 3 day notices door to door
  • Identify leaders in the community through 1:1 conversations and house visits
  • Conduct regular phonebanks to community members to inform them of key issues in the neighborhood, new programs and resources available to them, and new initiatives from the city or the council office
  • Reach daily and weekly goals on community members contacted
  • Drive turnout for neighborhood-based leadership trainings and support the
    development of neighborhood-based committees
  • Plan activities such as community clean ups, training, etc.
  • Participate in key mobilizations, meetings, and activities
  • Operate city vehicles for various needs
  • Support with community events, including signing in and greeting community members, conducting presentations, and (sometimes) providing childcare during community events and meetings
  • Work collaboratively with the CD13 Civic Engagement and Community Organizing Department

Job Description:

CD 13 Community Organizing Fellowship

  • Participate in other city council activities, including meetings at city hall, team briefings, etc.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Although fellows have a standardized schedule, they should be ready to work long and irregular hours including nights and weekends
  • Must attend a mandatory orientation and training
  • Must have strong written and verbal communication skills as well as ability to connect with diverse people, always maintaining a positive and enthusiastic attitude
  • Must be professional and represent the Council Office in a positive light
  • Maintain organization and accuracy when canvassing or maintaining their materials
  • Must arrive on the correct date, time and location during designated times
  • Must be able to use a cellphone and Google Form response tracker
  • Confidence talking to tenants at the door
  • Canvassers must be prepared to complete light physical activities such as standing
    or walking for long periods of time
  • Fluency in English and one other language (Spanish, Korean, Thai, Armenian, or Tagalog preferred)
  • Have Valid CA Drivers License

Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate has the following experience and skills:

  • Prior canvassing or phone banking experience
  • Prior experience in social justice spaces, movement-building, and college activism

Eligibility Requirements: 

  • Must reside in the City of Los Angeles
  • Must be between 18 to 30 years old
  • Must have the legal right to work in the United States
