Communications Intern

The Office of Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martínez is seeking a thoughtful, hard-working, and compassionate team member to work in a collaborative, fast-paced environment as a part-time, Communications Intern. 

The ideal candidate should demonstrate a commitment to racial and economic justice, some experience with social media/communications, and a strong understanding of the diverse communities and neighborhoods within Council District 13. 

The internship term is up to 6 months, and the ideal candidate will be able to work up to 20 hours per week. The compensation for the paid internship is $25 per hour and is not eligible for benefits.

Duties include, but are not limited to: 

Digital

  • Update website copy/structure/design
  • Post newsletter weekly on website
  • Send out weekly comms debriefs with clips, comms updates, and metrics.
  • Translate content from English to Spanish

Social Media

  • Design graphics/images for social media
  • Draft social media posts in both English and Spanish
  • Assist communications team with social media projects

Writing

  • Help draft updates for the office, including the office’s weekly newsletter
  • Assist communications team preparations for talking points, speeches, and briefing memos for in-district events

Constituent Services

  • Manage the office’s mail correspondence system that we use to alert constituents about changes in their community, with assistance from the communications team
  • Assist communications, field, and admin teams with certificate and presentation requests

The ideal candidate should have experience in the following: 

  • Strong graphic design skills.
  • Exceptional written, verbal, and visual communication skills in both Spanish and English. 
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • A capacity for hard work, and a willingness to collaborate with others.
  • Enthusiasm for and some familiarity with local politics and municipal policy.
  • Experience in project management, graphic design, or other communications-related fields is a plus.
