“I have come here to chew bubble gum and kick ass… and I’m all out of bubble gum.”
They Live (1988), John Carpenter’s horror/sci-fi cult classic, has long held the distinction of being the most well known and unabashed anti-capitalist Hollywood film, but it has also demonstrated an adaptability to the changing socio-political contexts of American history – finding new audiences for its message in each successive generation since its release.
For this month’s Lens On Life, we’ll be teaming up with @dsa_la for an evening of action, b-picture horror thrills, and political education, as we screen this timeless classic and an interactive discussion to unpack the film’s famous critique of ideology and its prescient depiction of the cruelty experienced by Los Angeles’ unhoused population.
RSVP at bit.ly/lensonlife13 and join us Wednesday, October 21 for a FREE screening of this timeless classic.
Doors at 6pm, Film at 7pm!
