The Office of Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martínez is seeking a thoughtful, hard-working, and compassionate team member to work in a collaborative, fast-paced environment as a Community Organizing Deputy. The ideal candidate will be deeply committed to building power for working families in Council District 13 (CD13) and across Los Angeles. They should demonstrate a strong dedication to racial and economic justice and have experience in public policy or grassroots advocacy.
The Community Organizing Deputy will support the development and execution of the CD13 organizing program, engaging CD13 neighborhood leaders, grassroots groups, community organizations, unions, activists and volunteers. In particular, the Deputy will be assigned to expand our CD13 rapid response effort and build out our organizing efforts around immigration justice issues. Secondarily, they will lead our geographic organizing around a target neighborhood, through our Neighborhood Solidarity Program, to develop a base of constituents and recruit and develop a committee of constituent leaders.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Manage and expand a base of rapid responders through the CD13 Rapid Response Network.
- Recruit and develop a committee of directly-impacted individuals in collaboration with community organizations.
- Develop and lead organizing efforts in support of the Office’s policy priorities and of key issues identified by constituents.
- Support the development and execution of an organizing campaign to identify leaders, build a committee, conduct trainings, and mobilize community members in key strategic neighborhoods in the district
- Conduct door-to-door house visits weekly and identify leaders in target neighborhoods.
- Conduct house meeting campaigns.
- Support the development and training of community leaders.
- Proactively engage with constituents, community groups, and other stakeholders, to identify key concerns and connect them with services available to address those concerns.
- Facilitate community events, conduct community trainings, and represent the office at various events.
- Work collaboratively with CD13 interns, in particular with participants in our Organizing Fellowship.
- Recruit volunteers through direct outreach in the field and through outreach to the volunteer database.
- Work collaboratively with other Council office teams, community organizations, and other council offices.
The ideal candidate:
- Works well in a team and has a positive and energetic attitude.
- Must be self-motivated and able to work independently to create and execute assignments.
- Has 2+ years of experience with organizing campaigns or other community-based works, as well as applying and training others in the various facets of organizing.
- Has an understanding of Los Angeles politics, Council District 13, and the long-standing challenges and needs facing working families.
- Demonstrates the ability to communicate effectively with community stakeholders from all backgrounds and neighborhoods in the district.
- Is fluent in spoken and written Spanish and able to provide simultaneous interpretation
The position is full-time and exempt from Civil Service. Salary range is $69,000 - $77,000 based on experience, and includes excellent benefits.
