100 Days of ICE raids

📊 BY THE NUMBERS: TRUMP’S IMMIGRATION RAIDS IN LA

It’s been 106 days since ICE began indiscriminately targeting workers and tearing families apart in Los Angeles.

Now, Trump is escalating these raids nationwide, and the Supreme Court is granting masked federal agents the power to detain anyone without due process. Only by capturing the full picture can we prepare other cities for what’s ahead, and ready ourselves for the likelihood that these attacks will return with even greater force.

LA Times Analysis of DHS Data, June 1-26

  • 68% of those detained had no criminal conviction
  • The median age of people detained was 39, with the government primarily taking men
  • Latinos are overrepresented in detainments (graph below)

What’s Next?

Republicans in Washington just handed ICE a $75 billion funding boost over four years — making its budget larger than the entire military of large countries like Spain and Ireland.

That scale of power is designed to target and intimidate our communities. We need to be ready. Click here to join our Rapid Response & Community Defense Training in person this Thursday, September 25, from 6-8 pm.

Four More Quick Hits

  1. City Council Approves Convention Center Modernization

City Council voted yesterday to move forward with a long-awaited renovation and expansion to bring LA’s Convention Center into the 21st Century

Right now, our convention center is extremely outdated, lagging behind cities like Fresno and Kansas City in performance. This is a big investment that will create thousands of good-paying, union jobs while attracting new visitors to LA.

  1. Public Service Loan Forgiveness

This week, we joined hundreds of local officials across the country in signing a letter opposing President Trump’s latest attack on Public Service Loan Forgiveness.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness was created in 2007 to help teachers, nurses, city workers, and nonprofit staff get their student loans forgiven after 10 years of public service. Now, Trump is trying to rewrite the rules to kick people out of the program if they work for organizations his administration disagrees with — from immigrant rights groups to nonprofits supporting free speech and civil rights.

This move is illegal and deeply unfair to the people who have spent years serving their communities with the promise of debt relief.
