7 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE ICE RAIDS
The past week has been terrifying, and in LA, we find ourselves at the epicenter of the struggle for American democracy. We need to keep showing up for our communities – because we need to keep families together.
Here are 7 things you need to know this weekend about what’s been going on:
1. People are being disappeared and given no access to their family or a lawyer.
2. ICE is targeting vulnerable locations like nursing homes, churches, and even a confidential domestic violence shelter.
3. The federal government has taken American citizens into custody – not just undocumented people.
4. Hundreds of millions of dollars have been wasted to tear families apart.
5. The protests are overwhelmingly peaceful, both in Downtown and across the city. The isolated instances of property damage aren’t from protestors, but from agitators, who often come out in the middle of the night – hours after the protests leave.
6. LAPD has spent tens of millions on training since the George Floyd protests — yet reports show officers that continue to use the same harmful crowd-control tactics that violate use of force policies.
7. A three-judge panel will determine if the National Guard has to be returned from Trump’s control after a hearing this coming Tuesday. A previous ruling in California’s favor was put on hold pending this upcoming hearing.
If you see ICE, call the LA Rapid Response Hotline at 1-888-624-4752. We have each others’ backs. Stay disciplined. Stay safe.
