Bringing 41 Unhoused People Inside

ONE BIG THING: TWO INSIDE SAFES IN CD13

What Happened?

Last week, our office worked with the Mayor, City partners, and trusted service providers on two Inside Safe operations in Hollywood and near Koreatown that brought a combined 41 unhoused residents off the streets and into hotel/motel rooms.

Because of our care-centered approach, these operations had a 100% acceptance rate of services. Through our efforts, we're dispelling the myth that unhoused people are "service resistant," and proving that when we do the hard work to find sustainable housing solutions, we can bring folks off the streets for good.

Why it Matters

Many people living at the Hollywood encampment on Sunset Blvd had been in the same area on the street for over five years, and now they are finally able to move inside with mental health/addiction services and on the pathway to permanent housing.

For months, our homelessness team has been working with community organizations and trusted service providers to build trust with encampment residents and line up services and housing options so we could bring folks inside.

We’ve now housed over 350 people in our district just through Inside Safe. When we only have 400 total interim shelter beds in our district for over 3,000 people living on our streets, it’s so important to open up more temporary beds to bolster our capacity as we build more affordable housing.

Two More Quick Hits!

1. Raising the 1st Pride Flag at LA City Hall

For the first time in LA’s history, the Pride Flag is flying at City Hall.

Before, LA’s antiquated Flag Ordinance prevented any flag from being flown at a city building besides the city flag, state flag, American flag, and the POW flag.

Thanks to a coalition led by Councilmember Tim McOsker, we were able to change the outdated law and allow for the Progress Pride Flag to be flown at City Hall.

2. LA Pride Parade Sunday

In other pride news, the 2024 LA Pride Parade kicks off at Highland Ave and Sunset Blvd tomorrow at 11am, and the LA Pride Block Party will be on Hollywood Blvd from 12pm-8pm.

Check out the parade route and a map of the Block Party below!
