Building a More Representative LA at the Ballot Box

Residential Voting Los Angeles

ONE BIG THING: RESIDENTIAL VOTING RALLIES SUPPORT

What Happened?

This week, we joined community members, advocates, and coalition partners at City Hall to rally in support of Residential Voting — a proposal that would allow City Council to pass a law in the future allowing longtime Los Angeles residents who are not U.S. citizens to vote in local city elections.

Cities and jurisdictions across the country, from San Francisco to Maryland and Vermont, have adopted forms of Residential Voting to ensure that residents who pay taxes, raise families, and contribute to their communities have representation in local government.

Alongside partners including CHIRLA, CARECEN, Community Coalition, Pilipino Workers Center, Jewish Partnership for Los Angeles, Community Power Collective, and many others, we delivered a simple message:

If you live in the city, contribute to the city, raise your family in the city, and are impacted by the decisions made in the city, you deserve a voice in the city.

Why it Matters

This is about parents, workers, and small business owners who are deeply invested in our communities but currently have no say in the decisions that affect their daily lives. People like:

  • Gladys, single mother and survivor of domestic violence who has lived in Silver Lake for over 30 years and raised her eight children through LAUSD schools.

  • Jesús, a dreamer who has essentially spent his whole life in Los Angeles and works every day to contribute to the city he calls home.

  • Grace, a legal permanent resident who immigrated to Los Angeles from the Philippines 24 years ago to be an elder caregiver.

  • Ana, a DACA recipient who has lived in Los Angeles for 23 years and is raising two U.S.-citizen children enrolled in LAUSD schools.

Immigrants make up more than half of business owners in the city, a majority of essential workers, and contribute nearly $15 billion in taxes annually. They deserve a voice in our future.

Why Now?

With the Supreme Court gutting the Voting Rights Act and California Republicans looking to further restrict voting rights, we have an opportunity to fight back with an alternative vision that expands civic participation and strengthens local democracy.

What’s Next?

The City Council's Rules Committee will consider the Residential Voting proposal on Monday, ahead of Wednesday's deadline for measures to be placed on the November ballot.

The coming days will be critical as we work toward a more inclusive and representative democracy in Los Angeles.
