ONE BIG THING: FIGHTING TRUMP’S INHUMANE AGENDA
What Happened?
If you have LA Times push notifications on your phone, you probably got this jumpscare of an alert on Thursday morning.
Despite a 9-0 Supreme Court decision ordering his return, Trump is refusing to bring back Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland father and union apprentice who was illegally deported to a prison in El Salvador. It’s dangerous, cruel, and a fundamental challenge to the Constitution.
Here in the LA area, ICE agents are seeking access to children in our schools, and separating innocent families who have been in the US for decades.
Why it Matters
We are doing everything we can at the city-level to strengthen our Sanctuary City status and protect immigrant families, but the Trump administration has made it clear that they’re willing to break laws to carry out their agenda.
From his failed family separation policy to his recent U-turn on tariffs, the one thing that consistently forces Trump to back down is sustained public pressure.
What’s Next?
Trump has now openly stated he plans to send U.S. citizens to the same El Salvador prisons.
While Senator Chris Van Hollen flew to El Salvador to increase attention and confirm Kilmar’s safety, some national leaders are choosing silence – falling back on the same tired playbook that helped Trump rise to power in the first place.
We can’t afford silence.
Last weekend, we joined 36,000 neighbors in front of City Hall for the Fighting Oligarchy Rally – the biggest rally Bernie or AOC have ever held. It was proof that people are ready to fight back – and it’s time to turn that energy into action. Because the stakes couldn’t be higher: our democracy is on the line.
