FIRE AND WIND UPDATE: JANUARY 8

NOTE: Please share this email with your neighbors, friends, and community groups. We don't have everyone's email, so your help can make a difference in keeping people safe.

Dear Neighbor,

We want to share the most recent updates we have about the fires around LA and the ongoing windstorm, along with important safety information. While there are no evacuation orders for neighborhoods in Council District 13, extreme weather conditions and fire risks mean residents should stay inside if possible, stay vigilant, and be prepared for conditions to change rapidly.

SCHOOL CLOSURES

The following schools in District 13 are CLOSED. LAUSD will extend flexibility with schedules and attendance. Students with chronic health and/or respiratory conditions should not go to school.

WINDSTORM
  • Peak wind conditions are expected to persist through Wednesday morning, creating a high risk for additional fires and hazards like falling trees and power lines.
  • Red Flag Parking Restrictions remain in effect.
  • Stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel unless evacuation orders are issued.

POWER OUTAGES
  • As of 8am this morning 135,679 households are without power, which is 9% of LADWP’s total customers. Crews are working in hazardous conditions to restore service as quickly as possible. Outages may take 24-48 hours or longer to restore.
  • If you lose power: Report outages online at LADWP Outages or call 1-800-DIAL-DWP (1-800-342-5397). Keep flashlights and extra batteries nearby. Keep your refrigerator closed to preserve food.
  • LADWP has restored power to 77,797 households since the start of the storm.

RESOURCES AND SAFETY TIPS
  1. Sign up for NotifyLA alerts and encourage your neighbors to do so as well. Leave your phone on to receive alerts even if you are sleeping and don’t use “do not disturb” mode during high-risk weather.
  2. Monitor LAFD Alerts to see updates on Red Flag Parking Restrictions and active fire incidents in the City of Los Angeles.
  3. Put your go-bag by the front door. Ensure that you have all essential items at the ready.
  4. Plan multiple evacuation routes in your neighborhood in the event of a fire.
  5. Call 9-1-1 for life-threatening emergencies. Report downed trees and other non-life-threatening hazards to lacity.gov/myla311
  6. Do not go near downed power lines.
