ONE BIG THING: HELPING 53 PEOPLE MOVE OFF THE STREETS
What Happened?
On Thursday near Virgil and the 101, we worked with the Mayor’s Inside Safe Team and trusted service providers to bring 53 people off the streets and into motel rooms, with a 98% acceptance rate of housing and services.
Why it Matters
This was the largest group of encampments in our district, and our 98% success rate continues to dispel the myth of “service resistance.”
By bringing together all of our resources from the city, county, and trusted providers, we were able to tailor what we could offer residents to better serve their needs. Put simply: when the city offers unhoused residents real housing options and services – people take it.
What’s Next?
For the first time ever, LA experienced back to back years of decreases in homelessness, and an independent RAND report found that unsheltered homelessness in Hollywood has been cut by 49%.
Those results are a credit to:
- Inside Safe operations with the Mayor’s team,
- Expanding our district’s interim housing beds by 13%
- Record-setting permanent supportive housing placements.
Still, this is not the time for victory laps. We need to keep following the evidence and doing everything we can to help people get off the streets and into housing with the mental health/addiction resources they need.
Two More Quick Hits
- Executive Directive 17: Strengthening Protections Against ICE
🛑 No City property for DHS.
🛑 No federal agents without identification.
This week, we proudly stood with Mayor Bass for the signing of Executive Directive 17 — and seconded a motion at City Council to lock these protections into law and strengthen immigrant protections against federal attacks in our communities.
We’re pushing urgently to implement and enforce the strongest protections possible. And on the ground, we’ve hundreds of neighbors this year to join our Rapid Response Network. Sign up at bit.ly/CD13RRN to get notified about upcoming trainings!
