ONE BIG THING: HOPE FOR MORE HOUSING
What Happened?
Just over a year ago, Los Angeles passed a package of major housing reforms in the hopes of making it easier to build housing near transit, jobs, and high-opportunity areas where demand for housing is the highest.
It’s called the Citywide Housing Incentive Program (CHIP), and this week, we learned just how transformative the program is becoming:
Why it Matters
When we first approved this program, we knew developers were interested. One year later, we know it’s working.
Over 28,000 homes are in the pipeline, affordable housing is getting built in neighborhoods that have historically resisted it, and 90% of these projects are moving through streamlined approvals rather than bureaucratic hearings where politicians can kill projects they don’t like.
What’s Next?
We're focused on eliminating the remaining bottlenecks that can delay housing production like permitting and DWP hookups, to make sure approved projects actually get built.
We joined Mayor Bass and the developer Generation Real Estate to celebrate a 54-unit project under streamlined construction processes in Hollywood right now. From start to finish, the entire project is expected to take just 14 months to complete — a massive shift from the yearslong process to even begin a project before we took office.
One year in, the results are becoming clear: when we make it easier to build housing, housing gets built.
