ONE BIG THING: WATER UNDER THE BRIDGE

What Happened?

After years of setbacks, crews will break ground next month on major upgrades to the historic Glendale-Hyperion Bridge next month!

Improvements include:

🚶‍♀️ Pedestrian & Bike Access

  • Direct connection to the LA RiverWay walking and biking path
  • More than 17,000 square feet of new sidewalk space

🏗 Safety & Infrastructure

  • Seismic retrofit to strengthen against earthquakes
  • Repairs and upgrades to lighting and pavement

đźš— Traffic Improvements

  • Realignment of the I-5 northbound off-ramp to smooth traffic and allow both eastbound and westbound travel along Glendale Boulevard

Why it Matters

The Glendale-Hyperion Bridge will turn 100 years old in 2029, and for people who drive across, it can feel like it hasn’t seen improvements over the entire century. Massive potholes, narrow sidewalks, and a total lack of bike infrastructure all underscore the dire need for improvements for all travellers.

During the last budget cycle, the project was at risk of losing City funding — but our office stepped in alongside dozens of community partners to protect the funding, move the project forward, and finally end more than a decade of delays.

What’s Next?

Groundbreaking will begin in the coming weeks. Early work will focus on preparation below the bridge, so residents may not see immediate changes above deck.

To avoid full bridge closures, construction will take place in phases over the next 5–6 years.

Two More Quick Hits!

  1. Rapid Response Across the District

We’ve now onboarded over 300 community members to our districtwide Rapid Response Network!

This week, we held trainings with educators in Hollywood, and partnered with Sunday Jump in Historic Filipinotown to bring 50 more into the network.

To get notified of upcoming trainings, visit bit.ly/CD13RRN

  1. Valentine’s Food Drive Recap

On Valentine’s Day, we helped support a community-run food drive that collected 1,500 pounds of food for NDLONIDEPSCA and Polo’s Pantry to help keep local immigrant kids and families fed in Los Angeles, including those facing hardship in the face of federal policies.

This 100% volunteer effort based out of Young People to the Front in CD13 has now collected over $15,000 in retail value of food across two food drives.

Street Light Crew Corner

Our Street Light Repair Team dedicated exclusively to CD13 just started their work in the district!

This new section will allow us to take a look into what areas of the district are getting repairs, what that repair/fortification work actually looks like, and new developments about how to fix our streetlight issues long-term.

Stay tuned next week for our first report!
