ONE BIG THING: NEW PLAYGROUNDS IN DISTRICT 13

What Happened?

In collaboration with the Department of Recreation and Parks, we’re officially opening two new playgrounds at Chevy Chase Park and Unidad Park today.

These community investments replace outdated and nonfunctioning equipment with brand new playground equipment, expanded seating, and more shade structures.

Why it Matters

Thriving parks uplift our entire community. They provide a safe space for new families to play, offer after-school activities that keep young people engaged and out of trouble, and create opportunities for our diverse neighborhoods to come together.

Investing in our parks means investing in a healthier, safer, and more vibrant city.

What’s Next?

All parks across the district and our city need the investment and care we’re seeing in Atwater Village and Historic Filipinotown. With specific revenue sources dedicated to funding parks, we can improve our public spaces across the district – from our smallest pocket parks to the Silver Lake Reservoir, and more.

Two More Quick Hits

          1. New Youth Mental Health Facility Coming to Echo Park

Last week, we joined the groundbreaking for an expansion of Gateways Hospital that will provide 37 new mental health beds for young people in our community.

As nearly half of adolescents report struggling with a mental health issue, we need to double and triple down on these investments and start treating mental health care the same as physical health care.

            2. Did a Compost Bin Show Up at Your Door this Week?

The LA Department of Sanitation is currently delivering compost bins to households across the city. By composting our food scraps, we can reduce waste, improve soil quality, and lower emissions.

If you got a bin and don’t need one, or if you want one but didn’t get one – stop by our district office to drop it off or pick it up!

CD13 Pet of the Week

This newsletter’s Pet of the Week is Primavera, in honor of the beautiful Spring weather we enjoyed this week. She’s a beautiful mixed breed who’s soft on the eyes.

Primavera is actually a repeat pet of the week who has been at the North Central Animal Shelter for over a year, so let’s make sure she finds a forever home before next Spring!
