ONE BIG THING: OPERATION CLEAN 13
What Happened?
This week, City Council approved our motion to invest a total of $1 million for our dedicated Clean Teams in Council District 13.
This brings our total to three Clean Teams, which we can use to quickly respond to constituent clean up requests, illegal dumping hotspots, and more. These teams are run through the LA Conversation Corps, a nonprofit dedicated to youth development and environmental conservation. Which makes this program a win-win because it provides at-risk young people with paid job experience, training, and mentorship for their careers.
Through our partnership with LACC, we are able to make a difference in the community by prioritizing cleanliness, and increasing the quality of life in our district – all while creating job opportunities for Angelenos.
Why it Matters
One of the biggest concerns we hear from residents is the lack of proactive bulky-item pickup and regular neighborhood cleanups to keep our communities welcoming and safe. That’s in part because the City has increasingly cut funding for sanitation and street services in favor of other priorities.
We’ll keep fighting to restore core city services through the budget process, but our communities need solutions now. That’s what our CD13 Clean Teams help deliver.
Last year, our two LACC Clean Teams were able to:
- Collect and dispose of 489,646 lbs of trash
- Remove 4,425 illegally dumped items
- Conduct over 95,800 sq. ft of weed abatement
And this is only part of the work being carried out in our district, with the addition of a third team we are able to have these teams hyper-focus on specific cleaning needs within CD13!
