ONE BIG THING: A CONGRESSIONAL HEARING TO INVESTIGATE TRUMP'S BRUTALITY

What Happened?

On Monday, we joined Mayor Bass and Congressman Robert Garcia, along with several elected and community leaders, for a congressional hearing on federal immigration actions in Los Angeles over the past year.

The hearing convened local leaders, members of Congress, community organizations, and individuals affected by the Trump administration’s mass deportation agenda, to discuss what they have seen and experienced over the last ten months of the Trump presidency.

We had the opportunity to speak about the brutality we have seen in our district and address the lack of due process that so many members of our community have experienced. We also heard from Mayor Bass and the Mayor of Long Beach, Rex Richardson, as well as leaders from CHIRLA, Thai CDC, SEIU USWW, and Andrea Velez, a U.S. citizen who was wrongfully detained by ICE in June, and told us of her horrific treatment while in detention.

Why it Matters

In our district, what we have seen is brutality for brutality’s sake - US Citizens arrested with no due process, families torn apart and left to fend for themselves, and entire communities paralyzed, as businesses lose the workers they rely on to fear, and families too afraid to send their children to school stay home.

The hearing on Monday was a chance for the Democratic members of the House Oversight Committee to put into the official government record the stories we have heard and witnessed firsthand over the last ten months, so that in time, the Trump administration can be held accountable for their illegal operations.

Now that those stories are in the public record, they can be used to take legal action against these bad actors, should we have a more favorable administration in the future.

What’s Next?

This was the first hearing of this kind, but there will be more to follow, as Congressman Garcia and Democrats on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee look to continue documenting the abuses of this presidential administration’s immigration forces.

Congressman Garcia also announced the launch of the Oversight Immigration Enforcement Dashboard, meant to document and archive possible misconduct by federal agents across the country. On Monday, he said the dashboard already has more than 250 alleged documented instances of misconduct.

These measures are just the beginning, as we start to uncover the full breadth of the abuses of power perpetuated by ICE and the Trump administration. As we learn more, we will be able to point to these instances as we build a case to fight back against the rise of totalitarianism that this president has put us on the path towards.

One More Quick Hit
