One Big Thing: We Gave Out 9,000 Free Turkeys To The Community!

What Happened?

Yesterday, we teamed up with Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez and our friends at City Council District 1 to put together our biggest food giveaway yet. This year, we handed out 9,000 turkeys to organizations and community members across our two districts!

More than 200 volunteers joined us at the Dream Center in Silver Lake and worked hard in the rain to make sure families got a turkey for next week’s Thanksgiving meal.

Why it Matters

Times have been tough for families in Los Angeles. Over the last year, we’ve experienced historic and destructive fires, rising costs for housing, groceries, and basic necessities, a government shutdown leading to funding cuts for food assistance, and immigration raids that have left our communities in fear.

With the holiday season upon us, we felt it was important to give back to those communities, and show them that their government can still work for them. Food insecurity is one of the biggest issues affecting families in our district, so being able to give them all a chance at a delicious meal for Thanksgiving was a no brainer.

What’s Next

This event was a perfect example of what can be accomplished through collaboration. We worked alongside community partners, including Thai CDC, Labor Community Services, the HiFi Coalition, and the LA Downtown American Center to source 9,000 turkeys and transform the Dream Center parking lot into a fully functioning distribution center.

We will have more volunteer opportunities in the coming months, so if you’d like to get involved with our office and give back to your community, click here to register

Two More Quick Hits:

  1. Jackie Goldberg Sunset Junction
On Monday, we gathered with community members and leaders at the historic Sunset Junction in Silver Lake, where we officially renamed the intersection to Jackie Goldberg Sunset Junction. Sunset Junction has been an integral part of the district's history, located just blocks away from The Black Cat, where the first nationally recognized demonstration for LGBTQIA+ rights happened in 1967. It was also the site of the Sunset Junction Street Fair in 1979, where members of the queer and latine communities in the area came together to get to know each other and celebrate the diversity of the neighborhood.

In renaming the intersection for Jackie Goldberg, an icon and leader in Los Angeles for over 40 years, we honored the legacy of that historic site once again. Jackie is a former Councilmember, Assemblyperson, and LAUSD Board President, and was instrumental in the fights to end corporal punishment in schools, establish the first Living Wage Ordinance in Los Angeles history, and grant all the rights included in marriage to gay people in California.

A huge thank you to Jackie for all she's done, and congratulations!

  1. CicLAvia: One Last Ride

This Sunday, November 23, CicLAvia will host another one of its incredible open streets events on Melrose Avenue in our district! This time, they’re partnering with Netflix to activate the street, in a nod to the last season of Stranger Things.

Put on your best 80's costume, and ride, skate, or walk over to enjoy a taste of what our streets can offer when we make safety and mobility a priority!
