ONE BIG THING: WORKER RECOVERY CENTERS OPEN
What Happened?
This week, we joined city leaders to officially open four resource centers for workers affected by the fires. These centers offer a one-stop shop to help workers navigate city services so they can get some money to get back on their feet.
The centers are open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the following locations:
- West Los Angeles: 5446 Sepulveda Blvd., Culver City, 90230
- Northeast San Fernando Valley: 13356 Eldridge Ave., Sylmar, 91342
- West Adams/Leimert Park: 4305 Degnan Blvd., Los Angeles, 90008
- Boyle Heights: 2130 1st St., Los Angeles, 90033
Why it Matters
While the wildfires have been put out, the secondary devastation they caused for many is just beginning. To fully recover, we need to make sure we don’t leave our workers behind.
Many impacted workers, including housekeepers, gardeners, and caregivers lost income and are now facing challenges affording basic necessities.
What’s Next?
We’re working to expand direct financial relief for displaced workers and ensure long-term support beyond emergency aid. Visit ewddlacity.com for a full guide of available city resources including job placement, unemployment assistance, and much more.
Two More Quick Hits!
1. LA County Passes Wildfire Eviction Protections
After our motion to implement eviction protections for workers who were impacted by the fires faced intense opposition in City Council, the LA County Board of Supervisors voted 4-0 to provide strong protections and financial support for impacted workers across all of LA County, including:
- Eviction protections through July 31 for renters who lost more than 10% of their income because of the fires
- $10 million in rent relief for impacted tenants and landlords
2. Expanding Support for Domestic Violence Survivors
Last year, over 16,000 people in LA called domestic violence hotlines seeking shelter – but only 10% found a safe bed.
Everyone deserves to live in safety, and last week, City Council took action to make that a reality with a $3 million investment to strengthen support services for survivors and expand shelter capacity by 13%. We also launched a task force to enforce restraining orders and ensure firearms are removed from abusers.
CD13 Pet of the Week
This week’s Pet of the Week is Dude, a large neutered German Shepherd at the North Central Animal Shelter, who knows never to pee on a rug that ties the whole room together!
He could be your forever bowling buddy, but don’t call him Lebowski - he’s Dude. He’s available to adopt or foster, so if you’re looking for a lifelong companion to take on long walks and cuddle up with, look no further - Dude abides.
